THE NETWORK OF ROUTES OF EMPEROR CHARLES V CELEBRATES THE FIFTH CENTENARY OF HIS CORONATION WITH A SERIES OF WEBINAR
Description

The Network of Routes of Emperor Charles V has programmed a cycle of web seminars to commemorate the fifth centenary of his coronation in Aachen (Germany), seminars which began today, the 23rd, when this event took place.

The first of the four webinars, scheduled for October, November and December, was attended by nearly 200 registered participants from a total of 19 countries (Finland, Spain, Belgium, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, France, Portugal, Italy, the Netherlands, Mexico, Peru, Luxembourg, Germany, Argentina, the United Kingdom, Sweden, Canada, Austria and Brazil). The seminars analysed aspects related to the coronation of Charles of Habsburg as Holy Roman Emperor, and nearly 500 participants took part in social networks.

The event included the presentation of Miguel Ángel Martín Ramos, President of the Network of Routes of Emperor Charles V; the words of Stefano Dominioni, Director of the Council of Europe's Institute of Cultural Routes; and the intervention of Alain Servantie, Coordinator of the Scientific Committee of the Network of Routes of Emperor Charles V.

For just over two hours, Roel Jacobs, historical advisor to the city of Brussels, Juan-Carlos d'Amico, professor at the University of Caen, and Jonathan Dumont, from the Austrian Academy of Sciences (Vienna), dealt with different aspects related to the figure of Emperor Charles V and his coronation as Holy Roman Emperor.

For the first of those historians, "in the first part of Charles V's government, the intervention and collaboration of many parties was necessary and essential, at a time when Charles V was facing great challenges"; while Juan Carlos D'amico focused his intervention on the three coronations that the emperor lived through, who found in his chancellor Mercurino Arborino Gattinara a very valid support in his first years as emperor. "Gattinara was an essential figure in the political strategy of Emperor Charles V, and he was also essential in the objective of achieving the union of universal Christianity in the figure of Emperor Charles V," admitted Juan-Carlos d'Amico.

Meanwhile, Jonathan Dumont wanted to highlight the importance of the various imaginaries that influenced Emperor Charles V - all important, essential and complementary - with a special role for symbolism in consolidating his coronation.

Finally, it should be remembered that the web seminars dedicated to the celebration of the fifth centenary of the coronation of Emperor Charles V will continue on 5ft November (in English), 19th November (in Spanish) and 3rd December (in French).

The webinar is now available on our YouTube channel and can be followed here.
